People are fond of the ‘drinking from a firehose’ phrase as it relates to social media, and with good reason. Amber Naslund has a knack for weeding out the fluff and breaking down the social media essentials with her concise, insightful posts. This quote is from one of her recent posts titled ‘How To Create Measurable Objectives’, a must-read.

Not everything you do has a return in itself that’s measurable in terms of dollars (which the root of the ROI equation).  So if you’re looking for, say, the ROI on your blog, you’d have to figure out how it contributes directly to your revenue stream in order to measure true ROI. That would require mapping your blog traffic or subscribers to your lead pipeline and conversions in terms of dollars, and tracking how much you’ve invested in time and capital toward the effort.altitudebranding.com, How To Create Measurable Objectives, Dec 2009

Reading. June 18, 2009

I think it’s accurate to say that of all my diversions and pastimes, reading brings me the most pleasure. As a child, I fell in love with it even before I could actually read- I remember sitting with my mother in my bed and ‘reading’ books to her. Once I actually learned how to read I devoured everything I could get my grubby little hands on: Nancy Drew (all of em’), Tolkien, Louisa May Alcott (I think I read Little Women two hundred times) Madeleine L’engle, Frances Hodgson Burnett, Nietzsche (kidding)… you get the idea. My insatiable appetite for books led me to be quite a precocious reader. By the time I reached the fifth grade, my mother was screening and buying adult reading level books for me. My college roomates teased me and swore that if a tornado came for the house while I was reading, I’d be a goner because I’d never lift my head from the book.

For me, reading provides an escape unsurpassed by any other- although skiing, running, yoga, climbing, music, and movies are close contenders.

Here are some of my most treasured reads:

Middlesex- Jeffrey Eugenides

Atlas Shrugged- Ayn Rand

Sense and Sensibility- Jane Austen

I Am Charlotte Simmons- Tom Wolfe

Shantaram- Gregory David Roberts

On Writing- Stephen King

What is the What- Dave Eggers

Jane Eyre- Charlotte Bronte

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time- Mark Haddon

Life of Pi- Yan Martel

I’m all about the music.

Here’s a little sample of what I’m listening to:

Glasvegas- (my new fav)

- the song ‘Geraldine’ is ridiculously good.

Sia (she puts on an amazing show)

Kings of Leon (quite possibly the best band of all time- yes, I said it)

Regina Spektor

Thom Yorke

Doves

The Strokes

Adele

MGMT
